Is it worth staying in the CBD itself?+

If your days are in the centre, yes: the grid is the one part of Nairobi where walking beats driving, and the museums, markets and civic landmarks are all inside twenty minutes of each other. If your days are out at the park or in the suburbs, a ridge address like Upper Hill saves you the two worst hours of traffic.

How big is the CBD, really?+

The core grid is roughly a kilometre and a half across, bounded by Uhuru Highway to the west, the railway to the south, and the Nairobi River and Ngara to the north and east. Every quarter page on this site shows the direct-line distance from Kenyatta Avenue at Moi Avenue, computed from coordinates.

Which quarters change after dark?+

River Road, Muthurwa and the streets around the bus termini are working daytime areas and empty out into something far less comfortable at night. Kenyatta Avenue and City Square are lit but deserted. The quarter pages each carry an after-dark line, and it is the first thing to read.

Can I walk from the centre to Nairobi National Park?+

No. The main gate is on Langata Road, several kilometres south of the grid, and the road out is not a walking route. Plan a vehicle for a dawn start.

What about altitude?+

Nairobi sits at about 1,795 metres. Nights are cooler than most visitors expect for the equator, the midday sun burns faster than the temperature suggests, and the first afternoon usually feels long.
