A 3 star hotel on Durham Road in Greater Nairobi, built for people arriving by car or attending something nearby. The free parking, the pool and the terrace decide it. If you want the centre on foot, this is the wrong side of town.
01What it is
Gramo Suites is a 3 star property on Durham Road off Gichugu Road, in Greater Nairobi. The list is long on practical things: free wifi, free car parking, free bottled water, a 24 hour front desk, housekeeping, laundry and dry cleaning, luggage storage, a safe, a hairdryer, an iron and board, and a concierge. Rooms come with a TV, a shower, a refrigerator and a microwave, and some have a balcony. There is a restaurant, a bar and lounge, a bar and snack cafe, a business centre and a meeting room, plus an outdoor pool, a terrace, a smoking area and wheelchair access. The room count sits between 51 and 100.
For someone staying at Gramo Suites, the shape of the day is the point. You are on a ridge of new concrete built for the car and the conference room, and the hotel lists what that kind of stay needs: parking, a desk, a meeting room, a pool for the end of the afternoon. After dark it is safe and dull, with hotel bars and a ride anywhere else. Gramo Suites suits a driver, a delegate or a family with a car who wants a quiet base and does not mind that the centre is not on the doorstep. It does not suit anyone who wants to walk out into the city, and it does not suit a traveller without a car.

04Standing outside the ten quarters
These hotels are not in Upper Hill and Community, and they are not in any of the ten quarters of the centre this site covers. They sit well outside the centre, in the inner suburbs, and Upper Hill and Community is only the nearest of the ten quarters. That matters more than it sounds: you are staying in the wider city, and anything in the CBD means travelling in and out for it. The ridge itself is new concrete built for the car and the conference room, and most of the CBD's office space has been moving up there since the 2000s, which is why you find the tallest towers in the country, the big hospitals, the aid agencies and an expressway ramp to the airport on it. The quarter sits 1.9 km from Kenyatta Avenue at Moi Avenue, which is 24 minutes on foot in a direct line.
Upper Hill and Community is best for meetings, a quiet night close in, and a fast run to the airport. After dark it is safe and dull: hotel bars, and a ride anywhere else. If you want the centre on foot, this is not the right base.

You need a car or a ride. The street is new concrete on a ridge, built for the car and the conference room, and after dark it is safe and dull, with hotel bars and a ride anywhere else. There is free car parking at the property, which is the reason to stay here rather than closer in.
What does the guest score mean?+
Gramo Suites scores 4.4 out of 5 from 181 reviews. That is a solid score from a decent number of guests, and it points to a property that does the practical things well rather than one with any particular atmosphere. Treat it as a base and check it against what you need.
