The Camp David Resort is a three star property on a new ridge development, built for cars and conference rooms. The deciding fact is its position in Greater Nairobi, well outside the centre this site covers. If you want to walk out to the city's offices and bars, this is the wrong base. If you drive, it works.

01What it is

The Camp David Resort lists the full set of services a conference or working stay needs: a 24 hour front desk, a business center, meeting room, concierge, free wifi, and a desk in the room. Rooms carry a balcony, bathroom, shower, TV, hairdryer, iron and board, safe, slippers, toiletries, and a sofa bed. The property also has a restaurant, bar or lounge, room service, breakfast, free bottled water, free newspaper, laundry and dry cleaning, housekeeping, luggage storage, and free car parking. Grounds include a garden, terrace, picnic area, and library. Cribs are available and pets are allowed. The list is thin on nothing essential, though a surcharge appears among the facilities with no detail on what it covers.

For someone staying at The Camp David Resort, that adds up to a car dependent base with the practical machinery of a working trip in place. You park free, you eat and drink on site, you take meetings in the business center or meeting room, and you sleep in a room with the usual fittings. The garden, terrace, and picnic area give you somewhere to sit outside. The verdict is narrow: this suits a self driving business visitor or a conference group that wants everything under one roof. It does not suit anyone hoping to step out into the centre, because the centre is not here.

04Standing outside the ten quarters

These hotels are not in Upper Hill and Community, and they are not in any of the ten quarters of the centre this site covers. They sit a long way out, in the wider city, and Upper Hill and Community is only the nearest of the ten quarters to them, which is not the same as being in it. Treat the quarter as a reference point, not an address. Anything you want in the CBD means travelling in and out.

The quarter itself is the western ridge above the centre: new concrete on a ridge, built for the car and the conference room. It is not the CBD proper but the ridge immediately above it, and the place most of the CBD's office space has been moving to since the 2000s: the tallest towers in the country, the big hospitals, the aid agencies, and an expressway ramp to the airport. It is best for meetings, a quiet night close in, and a fast run to the airport, and after dark it is safe and dull: hotel bars, and a ride anywhere else. The quarter lies 1.9 km from Kenyatta Avenue at Moi Avenue, which is 24 minutes on foot in a direct line.

05Booking it

Book The Camp David Resort direct if your trip is built around a car and a meeting room, not around walking the city. Most rooms here can be cancelled free, and you book them through app.impt.io. Every confirmed booking removes one tonne of CO2, at no extra cost to you. Five percent of what you pay comes back as IMPT credit, out of the hotel commission rather than added to your bill.

Facts on this page come from the booking supplier's record: star class, address, photographs and facility list. Guest scores come from verified stays. Nobody from this site has stayed here; the quarter copy around it is this site's own.

06Questions

Where exactly is The Camp David Resort?+

It sits on Island Dream Drive in Greater Nairobi, on the ridge development described as new concrete built for the car and the conference room. It is 10.85 km from Upper Hill and Community, which is the nearest of the ten quarters this site covers, so treat it as a base outside the centre.

What does the hotel actually provide?+

A 24 hour front desk, business center, meeting room, concierge, free wifi, free car parking, restaurant, bar or lounge, room service, breakfast, laundry and dry cleaning, housekeeping, luggage storage, and a safe. Rooms have a desk, balcony, TV, shower, hairdryer, iron and board, slippers, toiletries, and a sofa bed. There is also a garden, terrace, picnic area, and library.

How do I get into central Nairobi from here?+

You drive. The property is 11.9 km from Kenyatta Avenue at Moi Avenue, which is 149 minutes on foot in a direct line, and 10.85 km from Upper Hill and Community, which is the nearest of the ten quarters this site covers. After dark the area is safe and dull: hotel bars, and a ride anywhere else.

What does the guest score tell me?+

It holds a score of 3.9 out of 5 from 19 reviews. That is a modest, mixed picture rather than a ringing endorsement, and with only 19 reviews it is a thin sample. Read it as adequate rather than excellent, and judge the hotel mainly on whether its car dependent position suits your trip.
