A three star hotel on Mwanzi Road in Westlands, with parking, a pool of business and fitness facilities and a full front desk. It suits anyone staying in the western side of the city with their own transport. It does not suit a stay built around the old commercial centre on foot.
01What it is
Progressive Park Hotel lists the standard three star spread, and the useful part is the practical one: free wifi, free car parking, air conditioning, a 24 hour front desk and 24H. Security, lifts, luggage storage, laundry service and a concierge. Rooms carry a desk, safe, television, refrigerator, microwave, kitchen, iron and board, hairdryer, toiletries and towels, and there are non smoking rooms and family rooms. The wider list runs to a restaurant, bars and a lounge, room service, a business center with copy facilities, banquet space, a fitness center, sauna, steam room and spa, a garden and patio, a currency exchange, shuttle service and wheelchair access. Where it is thin is the ordinary middle: the facilities are given as a list of names, with no detail on how any of it is run.
What that adds up to for someone staying at Progressive Park Hotel is a workable base on the western side of Nairobi, the kind of place that functions without asking much of you. The 3 star rating sets the expectation, and the list of facilities is broad enough to cover a business trip or a longer family stay. Westlands is a functioning district in its own right, so you are not dependent on the centre for an evening. Book it if you have transport and want the west of the city. Do not book it if your days are built around the old commercial quarter.

04Standing outside the ten quarters
Before you book, be clear about where these hotels are. They sit well outside the centre, in the inner suburbs, and they are not in any of the ten quarters this site covers. Biashara Street and City Market is only the nearest of those quarters, which is not the same as being in it. You are in the wider city here, and every trip into the Central Business District is a journey in and out.
The market quarter itself is narrow, shaded, and the only part of the centre where the shops are still one-family wide. The oldest retail streets in the city: Biashara for cloth and haberdashery, Muindi Mbingu for flowers, and the 1930s City Market hall behind them for produce, curios and a fish counter. Jamia Mosque's three silver domes close the block. It is best for kikoi and kitenge cloth, curios without the tour-bus markup, and an hour of architecture. After dark it is a daytime quarter: the halls shut in the late afternoon and the streets empty with them. It lies 0.63 km from Kenyatta Avenue at Moi Avenue, which is 8 minutes on foot in a direct line.

Book Progressive Park Hotel if Westlands and the western side of the city are where your days actually happen, rather than the old centre. Most rooms here can be cancelled free, and you book them through app.impt.io. Every confirmed booking removes one tonne of CO2, at no extra cost to you. Five percent of what you pay comes back as IMPT credit, out of the hotel commission rather than added to your bill.
Facts on this page come from the booking supplier's record: star class, address, photographs and facility list. Guest scores come from verified stays. Nobody from this site has stayed here; the quarter copy around it is this site's own.
06Questions
Where is Progressive Park Hotel?+
It is at 10 Mwanzi Road Westlands, in Greater Nairobi. It stands 3.6 km from Kenyatta Avenue at Moi Avenue, which is 45 minutes on foot in a direct line, and it is nearer still to the western side of the city than to the old commercial quarter.
What does the hotel list for guests?+
Free wifi and free car parking, air conditioning, a 24 hour front desk with security, a restaurant, bars and a lounge, room service, a business center, a fitness center, sauna, steam room and spa, a garden and patio, family rooms, laundry service and wheelchair access. The list is given as names without further detail.
What does getting into the centre from Greater Nairobi mean?+
It means a car or a ride rather than a walk. The hotel is 3.1 km from Biashara Street and City Market, which is the nearest of the ten quarters this site covers. The centre is a daytime quarter, so plan around that.
What does the guest score mean?+
Progressive Park Hotel carries a guest score of 4.2 out of 5 from 603 reviews. That is a solid three star result from a large number of guests: good enough to expect the place to work as advertised, not a signal of anything beyond its class.
