A three star guest house and conference centre on a ridge outside the centre, built around cars, meeting rooms and a chapel. It suits delegates and drivers who want a walled compound and free parking. It does not suit anyone who wants the Central Business District on foot.

01What it is

CHAK Guest House & Conference Centre is a three star property on Musa Gitau Road in Greater Nairobi, and the list it publishes is a conference list more than a tourist one. There is a conference and banquet operation, a chapel, a business centre with copy and internet access, a restaurant, a bar and snack bar, breakfast, breakfast in room, lunch, buffet and special diets. Rooms come with balcony, bath or shower, WC, sink, desk, fan, TV, radio, telephone, safe, towels, toiletries, slippers, cot, iron and board and non smoking options. Grounds include a garden, terrace, lounge, jacuzzi and golf course. Car rental, shuttle service, free car parking and a 24 hour front desk and security support the car borne guest, and housekeeping, laundry and luggage storage cover longer stays. The list is thin on detail rather than on quantity: it is a facility inventory, with nothing said about the size of the rooms, the state of them or how the conference floors are laid out.

For someone staying here, the shape of the place is set by the road it sits on. New concrete on a ridge, built for the car and the conference room. That is the whole proposition: you arrive by vehicle, you park inside, you sleep and eat on site, and the day is organised around a meeting or a family function. After dark there is little to walk to, only hotel bars, and a ride anywhere else. So CHAK works for delegates, wedding and church groups, and drivers who value a compound with parking and a chapel. It does not work for a visitor who wants to step out of a lobby into the Central Business District. Choose it for the car park and the conference room, not for the street.

04Standing outside the ten quarters

These hotels are not in Upper Hill and Community, and they are not in any of the ten quarters of the centre this site covers. They sit well outside the centre, in the inner suburbs, and Upper Hill and Community is only the nearest of the ten quarters. That matters more than it sounds: you are staying in the wider city, and anything in the CBD means travelling in and out for it. The ridge itself is new concrete built for the car and the conference room, and most of the CBD's office space has been moving up there since the 2000s, which is why you find the tallest towers in the country, the big hospitals, the aid agencies and an expressway ramp to the airport on it. The quarter sits 1.9 km from Kenyatta Avenue at Moi Avenue, which is 24 minutes on foot in a direct line.

Upper Hill and Community is best for meetings, a quiet night close in, and a fast run to the airport. After dark it is safe and dull: hotel bars, and a ride anywhere else. If you want the centre on foot, this is not the right base.

05Booking it

Book this one only if you are arriving by car or being dropped, since the whole advantage of the compound is the parking and the quiet ridge setting. Most rooms here can be cancelled free, and you book them through app.impt.io. Every confirmed booking removes one tonne of CO2, at no extra cost to you. Five percent of what you pay comes back as IMPT credit, out of the hotel commission rather than added to your bill.

Facts on this page come from the booking supplier's record: star class, address, photographs and facility list. Guest scores come from verified stays. Nobody from this site has stayed here; the quarter copy around it is this site's own.
