41 Haven sits on Karen Hillcrest Drive in Greater Nairobi, on a ridge of new concrete built for the car and the conference room. Its list is broad and domestic rather than sharp: kitchens, a garden, a lounge, dining in and a desk for work. The deciding factor is that you need a car or a shuttle for everything, because the centre is well out of reach.

01What it is

41 Haven carries a three star rating and a long, practical list of facilities. Rooms come with a bathroom, shower, WC, towels and toiletries, a desk, a TV, a telephone, a safe, a coffee set and either a kitchen or a kitchenette, plus carpet in the rooms and a sofa bed in some. The house itself lists a garden, a terrace, a lounge with a fireplace, restaurant dining at breakfast, lunch and dinner, a bar and snack corner, and room service and breakfast in the room. It also offers free wifi, free car parking and a 24 hour front desk with security, express check in, concierge, luggage storage, currency exchange, laundry, dry cleaning, housekeeping and a babysitting service. A car rental service, a bike rental service and a shuttle service are all listed. The list is thin in one direction: the only recreation it names is massage, entertainment activities, a golf course and fishing, and the wheelchair accessible and family room provisions are named without detail.

For someone staying at 41 Haven, that adds up to a quiet, car dependent base. You drive or take the shuttle in, you park free, you eat on site or cook in your room, and you do not stand in a lobby queue at any hour. The trade is location. This is Greater Nairobi, not the Central Business District, and it is 9.23 km from Upper Hill and Community, which is the nearest of the ten quarters this site covers. That makes 41 Haven right for families, long stay guests and anyone with business on the ridge or a car at hand. It is wrong for a visitor who wants to walk out of the door into the centre each morning, because the street here is new concrete built for the car and the conference room, and after dark the area is safe and dull: hotel bars, and a ride anywhere else.

04Standing outside the ten quarters

These hotels are not in Upper Hill and Community, and they are not in any of the ten quarters of the centre this site covers. They sit a long way out, in the wider city, and Upper Hill and Community is only the nearest of the ten quarters to them, which is not the same as being in it. Treat the quarter as a reference point, not an address. Anything you want in the CBD means travelling in and out.

The quarter itself is the western ridge above the centre: new concrete on a ridge, built for the car and the conference room. It is not the CBD proper but the ridge immediately above it, and the place most of the CBD's office space has been moving to since the 2000s: the tallest towers in the country, the big hospitals, the aid agencies, and an expressway ramp to the airport. It is best for meetings, a quiet night close in, and a fast run to the airport, and after dark it is safe and dull: hotel bars, and a ride anywhere else. The quarter lies 1.9 km from Kenyatta Avenue at Moi Avenue, which is 24 minutes on foot in a direct line.

05Booking it

Book 41 Haven if you are arriving by car or have arranged a shuttle to the centre, and check the room type for a kitchen if you intend to eat in. Most rooms here can be cancelled free, and you book them through app.impt.io. Every confirmed booking removes one tonne of CO2, at no extra cost to you. Five percent of what you pay comes back as IMPT credit, out of the hotel commission rather than added to your bill.

Facts on this page come from the booking supplier's record: star class, address, photographs and facility list. Guest scores come from verified stays. Nobody from this site has stayed here; the quarter copy around it is this site's own.

06Questions

Where exactly is 41 Haven?+

It is on Karen Hillcrest Drive in Greater Nairobi, a ridge of new concrete built for the car and the conference room. That is 11.02 km from Kenyatta Avenue at Moi Avenue, which is 138 minutes on foot in a direct line, so plan on driving or taking the shuttle service the hotel lists.

What facilities does 41 Haven list?+

Rooms list a bathroom, shower, towels, toiletries, a desk, a TV, a safe, coffee, and a kitchen or kitchenette in some. The house lists a garden, terrace, lounge, restaurant, bar, room service, breakfast in the room, free wifi, free parking, a 24 hour front desk, security, laundry, a babysitting service, car and bike rental, and a shuttle.

How do I get into central Nairobi from Greater Nairobi?+

Not on foot in any practical sense. The centre is a long way off, and the nearest quarter this site covers is Upper Hill and Community, 9.23 km away. Use a car or the shuttle service listed by 41 Haven. After dark, expect hotel bars and a ride for anything else.

What does the guest score mean?+

41 Haven holds 4.4 out of 5 from 29 reviews. That is a small sample, so treat it as a signal rather than a settled verdict. It suggests the people who have stayed find the place solid and unremarkable rather than poor, which fits a three star house built for car borne guests.
